At Norwood Junior High, we have an "AWAY FOR THE DAY" policy for cell phones. We believe in focused instruction, and to minimize distractions, all cell phones should be turned off and put away as soon as students walk on campus. The use of a smart watch, ear buds, or any outside technology are also considered a communication device. Phones should remain off and out of sight in the backpack until the end of the school day. For consideration of student safety and to uphold state law, California (AB 3216 - Phone-Free School Act), all Norwood students must follow the electronic devise
- Norwood is a NO Cell Phone/communication device School. When the student needs to communicate with the parent during school hours, they may request the use of the classroom or office phone. When the parent needs to communicate a message to the student, the parent will leave the message with the office, and the message will be relayed to the student.
- Outside technology such as ipads, ear phones, smart watches, etc., are not permitted on campus. If a student has outside technological devices, they will be asked to turn in their device to the technology turn in area in the front office. Parents will be notified and asked to pick up the device from the front office.
When a student uses a mobile communication device in an unauthorized manner, the student may be disciplined and the device turned into the front office until the end of the day or until the parent picks it up.
Norwood Junior High is not responsible for lost, stolen, or confiscated electronic devices, nor will we investigate lost or stolen items. Please keep items of high value at home. Refusal to surrender your phone, or other prohibited electronic devices, when asked, is defiance. Defiance can result in discipline and or suspension, and the parent will be contacted.
For consideration of student safety and to uphold state law, California (AB 3216 - Phone-Free School Act), violations of electronic device policy will follow the progressive discipline.
- 1st Offense- staff members will confiscate the phone and return it to the student at the end of the class period. Staff may document the incident in the Aeries and or call home.
- 2nd Offense- the device will be turned into the office. Staff will document the incident in Aeries, and parents will be contacted. The phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day. The student will receive detention.
- 3rd Offense forward- the device will be turned into the office and will result in a phone contract for the week, month, quarter, or semester (depending on violation frequency). A parent will be contacted.
- Multiple infractions will result in detention assigned by the staff and/or vice principal.
- If the problems persist, continuous progressive discipline will follow.
Students and parents must provide staff with identification when picking up a device.
